Stay Safe & Sustainable this Valentine’s Day

Valentines day, a time to celebrate love, lovers and love making.

Okay, it is a made up day to sell a load of single-use stuff that gets thrown away or forgotten, but there is one single-use item we wholeheartedly endorse: The condom.

Don’t let any sustainability scenesters tell you otherwise, this much-needed single-use item is a must for everyone. Nothing protects better against both sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancies than the trusty condom.

However, there are some choices you can make to limit your impact. But while we normally say avoid companies/products that are not sustainable, with condoms, the golden rule is if there are no suitable alternatives, just buy whatever is available.

  • Choose latex over Polyurethane and Non-Biodegradable Condoms
  • Find companies use minimal packaging and recyclable materials

While famous companies like Durex are rated poorly by us (although don’t forget the golden rule), we recommend Fair Squared:

White box of Fair Squared vegan condoms with Fair Trade and Vegan logos.

Their condoms are made using rubber approved by the Fair Rubber Association, which looks to ensure a fair wage and better environmental standards. Most of their range is also vegan.

And when the fun is over, please do not flush the condom down the toilet. Wrap them up and put them in the general waste. While it will take a while, latex condoms will biodegrade in a landfill and do so faster than synthetic ones (if only everything about condoms lasted as long as they do in the rubbish.)

Whether you think it’s the most romantic day of the year, or the height of capitalist folly. Whether you are single, married, or doing your thing in the massive spectrum in between. We hope you have a nice Valentine’s Day and practice safe sex all year round.
